Coti – Metamemoria (2001/2020)

  • IDM
  • Electronic music
  • Experimental electronica
  • Downtempo
  • Minimal techno
  • Organic electronica
  • Musique concrète
  • Ambient techno

Coti's Metamemoria was firstly released on Vibrant Music in 2001 and since then being considered an important issue in Greece. Inner Ear Records released it on vinyl approximately two decades later to resurface electronic memories from the period when many important issues and projects did take place. Boards Of Canada, Squarepusher, Plaid, Plone, and of course two main stalwarts like Richard D. James based on his many pseudonyms, and Autechre from the Great Britain, and on the other side Teutonic IDM/neokrautrock/post-techno artists like To Rococo Rot, Mouse on Mars, Kreidler, Jan Jelinek, Pole, Oval, Microstoria had broadened borders of electronic music. Given that chronological and technological advantage most musicians from other districts were undoubtedly influenced by them. Metamemoria is a fascinating issue because of searching successfully for balance between coherent flow in harmonized and syncopated progression and refreshing sonic fabric and compelling effects. All these elements are properly represented doing away with undue exaggerations. However, the listener can find out a legacy of Kraftwerk coming from their Autobahn period. The favourite of mine is M Key, a superb track of cinematic semi-orchestrations imbued with heavy vinyl crackles and backed up by a slowed-down pace. In a word, solid performance.

Rktic - Northern Lights (2001)

9.1

/Ambient dub, Organic electronica, Dub-Tech, Tech-dub, Breaks, Dub, Minimal techno/

Comment: this set of 6 (mostly long-running) compositions by Ronny Pries rotates mostly around knee-deep, sappy dub configurations which are embellished with elusive ambient horizons, concrete music-near whiffs, drilling techno propulsions. On the other side, this issue can be considered as a whole searching for balance between spaced-out, wobbly structures and divergent pace progressions. Solid.

Various - Commie Release Compilation #2 (2001)

9.0

/Acid pop, Psychedelic, Funk rock, Dub, Crossover, Electronic pop, Big Beat, Alternative, Club dance/

Comment: if you like "old" music then you should listen to this 29-piece compilation issued on the Finnish label Commie. It veers away from uplifting funk rock, psychedelic trance and shaggy dub crossovers to acidic tekno, noiseful techno slabs, machine-distorted electro bites and rusty big beat and marred electronica and plain entertaining melodies. However, this enormous area of styles is covered up by the likes of Spiritual Algorithm, Jabsasonic, Kiviluoto Schutt, Matthew Tyas, Ddr Rhythm, Le Modem, Tero, Istari, Analogia, Mixture Model, Lastenfahrer, Artificial Unintelligence, Desertplanet, Fsd, Rabbit-O-matic, Makonnen, Full Scale Deflection, Meme. In a word, you will get convinced in that the Finnish artists are up to the level you actually need from fascinating music. And the machines seem to rule our world.

Jabsasonic - Kupittaa Dub (2001)

9.5

/Dub, Post rock, Epic, Art rock, Crossover, Experimental rock/

Comment: these 228 seconds are up there to instigate the dreams of the listener through subtle dub rhythms and spacious, symphonic guitar magnitudes. Art rock/post rock meets Jamaica, though, the composition is inspired by the environment of the Kupittaa railway station. Behind the project is Jarmo Lundgren, the musician/rhythm guitar player from Finland. Delicious and catchy.

Istari Lasterfahrer - That's the Story (2001)

/Industrial techno, Avant-techno, Experimental techno, Robot pop, Avant-industrial/

Comment: just one track spreaded out over 5 and a half minutes. It takes on brooding techno progressions being embellished with spoken word snippets (obviously snatched from an old movie), burning out possible air inbetween the layers within it. Indeed, it is essentially artificial and synthetic, more profoundly, it may be deemed a bow toward machine/robot-deflected, Kraftwerk-esque emotionless aesthetics, and on the other side, it celebrates the tradition of nihilistic old school industrial music particularly running in the vein of Cabaret Voltaire, and Throbbing Gristle. Istari Lasterfahrer is an artist from Hamburg, Germany and the single was released on Commie, a Finland-based blueprint.

Telafonica - Dos (2001)

/Indietronica, Experimental indie, Breaks, Avant-folk, Post-psychedelic electronica, Digifunk, Crossover/

Comment
: Telafonica is a combo from Sydney, Australia who have mixed up electronica and programmed beats with indie tunes approximately throughout a decade. There are 14 tracks mainly exorcized with heavy trip-hop, breakbeat, and (digi)funk vibes, though, sometimes running on more experimental shapes - for instance, Sunlight showcases itself through droning folk psychedelia which in turn is subjected to circulating algorithms (reminding a little bit of Simian, for instance). Or Radio Low which is built on abstract bass frequencies of didgeridoo backed up with changing cadences. One of the favourite of mine is 89 which is an instance of indie funk. Altogether, the album is filled in with well composed notches and the listener should be warned - it enlarges its load and quality with every following listening time.

Trance And The Arcade - troubleman 7 (2001/2011)

Free Music Archive
Troubleman Unlimited

8.4

/Harsh noise, Psycho-acoustic, Experimentalism, Techno/

Comment
: this 3-track issue was firstly released under the legendary/cult label Troubleman Unlimited almost 11 years ago. As a female voice says here in the opening track Drippp "noise is everywhere", indeed, the release does reflect upon the sharp elements of digitalized noise which used to be truly rough and bleak or on the other side just referring to the condition of elemental chaos. At times (the last track) it is blended with raw techno beats and weird squeaks and fringed with bulimic guggle.

Glass Candy - Love Love Love (2002)

Free Music Archive
Troubleman Unlimited
Lastfm

8.7

/Post-punk, Dance rock, Electro-rock, No Wave, Alternative pop/rock/

Comment: this was Glass Candy`s debut issue firstly released on Troubleman Unlimited in 2001. The duo being line-upped by Ida No, and Johnny Jewel (and Ginger Peach then either) offered up angular, no wave-ish post-punk guitars churned with slight dance vibes and jarred, pissed-off voices. All of that happened at a time when a new wave of punk rock made its revival. Anyway, some people consider it to be the best album by Glass Candy to date. Indeed, you are getting to love it.
